Sunset Overdrive Review

I have a confession to make. At first, before this came out, I thought the game would fall flat on it's face. The main character seemed unpleasant and overly cocky, combat looked repetitive, and the story seemed desperate. I was wrong as hell! This game is fast paced, action-packed, and has laugh-your-ass-off levels of funny in the writing. So let's get into the review!

We can't deny that Xbox One has a decent amount of exclusive games that are mostly awesome, what with Titanfall basically being the poster boy of Xbox One exclusives, a great multiplayer FPS (some hate it, but I think it's great), and let's not forget the kick ass Killer Instinct games. Yet, none have managed to be system sellers and rather just fun games. This game is undeniably a system seller for Xbox One. A light-heated breath of fresh air that reminds me of Dead Rising 3, you won't be bored. Weapons are so unique you will find yourself trying them all out as soon as you can, characters are far from boring (even if stereotypical in some respects) and it looks amazing.

Graphics and Sound

I don't usually care about graphics, but I must comment on the ones in Sunset Overdrive. Bright, eye catching and not serious at all, even the cover of the game is just fun to look at. But with such kickass graphics, you need kickass music. Not a problem! The soundtrack of this game is definitely that. Rock is the genre of music it uses, and that turns out pretty well. There's nothing more fun than killing zombies with rock music in the background whilst robots and people with baseball bats whiz past you! At least, nothing more epic.

Story

The story is that a contaminated energy drink -named Overcharge- has infected nearly everyone in Sunset City (where the game takes place) and turned them into mutants. With the city in havoc, you meet Walter, who saves you from some OD, lets you in his base, introduces you to other characters, and you plan to escape the city.

Enemies

Enemies are great. OD, standing for Overcharge Drinkers, are what the character refers to as zombies. With many types, such as Poppers, Spawners and Blowers to name a few. All with different purposes (from spawning more OD to shooting acid at you), there's huge variety and they're fun to kill. Scabs, at first, are weak, boring and just a pain to encounter. But as you progress in the campaign, you meet Rushers and Grenadiers, who add challenge to combat. Now we arrive at the Fizzco robots (small spoiler warning). Due to the result of Overcharge screwing the city up, Fizzco, the people who made the drink, have sent robots to kill everyone and everything to avoid risking exposure outside Sunset City. And BOY, did they build these guys good. It takes, at least, three close range shots to kill a normal Fizzco Rifle Bot, and that's risky because they can kill you easy and normally appear in groups. Blade Bots keep you on your toes and moving, Bomb Bots keep you at a distance, Tank Bots... good luck with those.

Conclusion

Overall, this game is far from a bore and keeps you coming back for more. It's hard if not impossible to stop playing and challenging in the right way. I give it a 9.5/10.
